A Letter from

Fr. Georgios Oikonomou

Dear visitors!

Welcome to our church’s website and thank you for visiting!

We hope that you’ll find useful information about St. Nicholas Greek

Orthodox Church as well as for the Orthodox faith.

Saint Nicholas is one of the 55 parishes that belong to the Metropolis of New Jersey. His Eminence, Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey is the Head and Spiritual Leader of the Metropolis.

This year we celebrate the seventy years since the creation of our parish!

The history of the church goes back to 1952. On September 14, 1952, the Feast Day of the Elevation of the Cross, twelve men led by the Holy Spirit gathered in the old Highlandtown Greek School building, the present site of St. Nicholas Church. These twelve men discussed and formulated the plans to establish the long hoped for second Greek Orthodox parish of Baltimore.

The twelve founders of St. Nicholas were: William Apostolou, Athanasios Demetriades, Stamatios Diakides, Bill Eliades, Kostas Lambros, Demetrios Latgis, Kostas Loukas, Euripides Papachristou, Soterios Plakitses, George Sideropoulos, Vasilios Venos, and Stylianos Xintas.

On the following days, these twelve men officially founded and incorporated the Parish of St. Nicholas. Shortly after, two significant events in the history of the St. Nicholas parish occurred.

Today, seventy years since the foundation of the parish, the founders and all those who fought for the creation, construction and continuous progress can rejoice and be proud. And if any of them are already in the kingdom of God, we remember their names with honor.

Now we look to the future and envision continued evolution. We are optimistic because our community is united and strong. And above all we rely on the youth, who through various organizations, the Bilingual Early Education Center, the Hellenic School, the Sunday School, GOYA, the Hellenic Golden Coins give us hope for the future.

If you are not already members of the community, we gladly invite you. Everyone is welcome in our church, and we will be very happy to include you. We wish you a pleasant browsing of the website and thanks again for your visit!

If you have any questions about the Greek Orthodox faith, and wish to arrange a hospital or pastoral visit or discuss any issue regarding our Church, please call me at 443-422-4548 or E-mail me.

With pastoral love in Christ Jesus

In His service
